Step-by-Step:

How to Make a Fire Starter Kit

Introduction
With a chill in the air, it's time to move your gardening indoors, next to the fire. I will teach you how to make a fire starter kit that's sure to sizzle!

Before You Begin
Purchase or gather the materials

Step 1: The Materials

  • Any type of kindling (cedar wood, apple, cherry wood, birch and pine)
  • Raffia or string
  • Basket or metal container with a lid
  • Little wooden flower pot
  • Dried flowers or herbs (try lavender or pepperberry)
  • Wax: beeswax, paraffin, or old candle wax
  • Candle wick
  • Dried moss
  • Optional: essential oil

Step 2: Walk in the Woods
The hunt for a firestarter basket begins in the woods. The search is on for small twigs and sticks; any type of kindling that will help start a sweet scented crackling fire like cedar wood, apple, cherry wood, birch and pine. No matter what treasures you find to light your fire, make sure they're nice and dry. This will be the foundation for your firestarter kit.

Step 3: Making the Bundles and Tying Them Together
We start by bundling the woods and sticks together with raffia. Put the bundles in the bottom of your basket or container.

Step 4: Adding Color
For color, look around you--maybe you have some dried flowers. Tie the flowers up with raffia. For flowers, I recommend pepperberry for the holiday season, or how about lavender? Pinecones clustered together also look great.

Step 5: Making Firepots: Gather Flowers
Tiny wooden firepots are another way to add color to your kit. First, bundle together some dried flowers or herbs like lavender and tie them together with candle wick.

Step 6: Dipping the Flowers for Firepots
Melt the wax down in a double boiler. Next, dip the wick attached to your bundle into the wax and remember to make sure it's well-coated. Then put the bottom of the bundle inside the wooden pot, making sure to leave the end of the wick hanging out.

Step 7: Arrange the Pot
Now, take some dried moss and stuff it around the lavender to hold it into place. Be as creative as you want!

Step 8: Final Touches
Finally, drizzle some more wax over the top (and make sure to do this away from your stovetop because this is very flammable). Now you have a firestarter pot that will help heat up your home!

Step 9: Other Fun Ideas
How about making a fire wand? It's just a cinnamon stick dipped in wax with an additional candle wick. For a fun embellishment, add a star-shaped piece of orange peel. Other ideas: try star anise, or persimmon slices--perfect for a crackling fire. Just remember: keep your firestarter kit away from flames and or store in metal container with a lid. If you want to fill the room with an aroma, pour a few drops of essential oil on the flowers or herbs.
